Literary Essay — Fear: However there are many different ways that a person can deal with them. In the end though it comes down to people that can succeed through the tragedy and live or someone that cannot handle it and people die.
In the Life of Pi you see Pi struggle through his devastating situation but in the end he is able to survive. Throughout many novels you see main characters go through a tragedy, such as the play, Hamlet and the book Lord of the Flies however in these novels you see that the main character allow their emotions to get the best of them and people end up dying.
Therefore people that allow their body to be controlled by emotion and fear through a tragedy will end up having dying or having someone close to them die.
In the play, Hamlet you see that Hamlet struggle many times with the tragedy of his uncle killing his father for the throne and his wife. Many times you think Hamlet is going to act upon his revenge plots but never really goes through with it. But Hamlet was too wrapped up in his emotional state to think properly.
In the Life of Pi however you see the main character overcomes his emotional state of helplessness and fear and is able to survive. Pi ends up ignoring all of his emotions and just concentrates on what he needs to do to survive.
Fear is one of the truly hardest things to overcome. Only fear can defeat life. It is clever, treacherous adversary… it has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy.
From my own personal experience I can totally agree with this. Fear does take ahold of life and in an instance you can be out of control. When I was diagnosed with diabetes I was utterly terrified.
I did not want to do anything but crawl up in a ball and die at first, everything about diabetes I was scared of. I had to prick my finger which meant blood which I absolutely hated, then of course the needles I had to take before every meal just pushed my anxiety way up.
Any time I ever had a needle in my life I would faint and now I had to give it to myself every day. At that time my fear was taking control of my body and I did not want to take care of myself but I also did not want to die so every day I struggled with myself to give the needles and prick my finger.
Eventually I was able to do both by myself.
Going through this experience I can see how hard fear is to get over but when it comes to dying or conquering your fear Pi and I both agreed that conquering your fear was the better option. Although Pi is able to overcome his fears and learns to live and train a tiger, in the novel Lord of the Flies the boys that get stranded on an isolated island are not able to overcome their fears.
But by this time the boys have become such savages they let fear control their decisions and eventually Jack and his new tribe end up killing one of their own.
Pi never let his fear control him, he allowed it to be part of him but he knew what was more important to live and he made sure he accomplished it.
He was able to work together with Richard Parker by feeding him and allowing him to have his territory and this allowed both Pi and Richard Parker to stay alive. If the boys in Lord of the Flies stayed and worked together they could have been stronger and controlled their fear, and this would have saved the lives of innocent boys.Play a game of Kahoot!

In , however, Martel’s international literary reputation was sealed with the publication of Life of Pi, a runaway bestseller that went on to win the prestigious Man Booker Prize (awarded each year to the best English-language novel written by a Commonwealth or Irish author) and had since been translated into thirty languages.
Fox Pi now was faced with not only the prospect of months at sea, but he would share his torment with a “three-year-old adult Bengal Tiger”(). After a few days, both stowaways, the hyena and zebra, had died.
With an adult tiger held at bay by only a tarpaulin, Pi needed to make a decision on how to deal with his last shipmate. Life of Pi - Literary Essay The important thing isn’t that we can live on love alone, but that life isn’t worth living without it. In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the author shows that Richard Parker is part of Pi, and is necessary for his survival.
(Click the themes infographic to download.). In his essay "How I Wrote Life of Pi," Yann Martel says, "I had neither family nor career to show for my thirty-three years on Earth.I was in need of a story.
